Unimog
Additional Model Ranges
The Unimog S becomes a favourite with the military.
From then on, innovation and range expansion progressed rapidly. In 1955, Daimler-Benz produced the first Unimog S (404 series). It featured a long wheelbase and was designed for military applications - against the background of the foundation of the German armed forces in 1956. During the long career of the Unimog S - which was in production for a quarter of a centruy until 1980 - the German armed forces became an extremely large customer for this variant and made it the best-selling Unimog of all time. Because of its outstanding off-road capabilities the Unimog S was also very popular with armies all around the world, and an initial batch of this model was sold to the French armed forces.
The Unimog S featured the oval radiator grille with inset, round headlamps which was typical of Daimler-Benz commercial vehicles at that time. The cab was of a timeless, attractive design. The approx. one-metre wheelbase of the original Unimog was increased to 2700 and then to 2900 millimetres. Unlike the original Unimog, the S was not powered by a diesel engine, but by a modified petrol unit from the passenger car sector. This initially developed an output of 82 hp from a displacement of 2.2 litres, with 110 hp and a displacement of 2.8 litres available as an alternative later. Over the years it was not only customers in uniform who proved enthusiastic about the Unimog S, as it also became increasingly popular with civilian customers.
