Additional Model Ranges
Unimog 411 series: improved engine output.
The basic 401/402 Unimog did not remain unchanged either. Its engine output was raised from 25 to 30 hp in 1956, while its designation was changed to Unimog 411. An alternative, longer wheelbase also became available. One year later the Unimog could also be had with a synchronised transmission instead of the usual constant-mesh unit. In 1959 a synchronised transmission became standard equipment - another first for agricultural tractors.
There were also a number of external changes: in 1957 the enclosed variants with a long wheelbase were equipped with a new cab. In the light of these innovations and extensions to the range, success came almost automatically: the 50 000th Unimog left the Gaggenau production lines in May 1961. The development of the original Unimog was as inexorable as its performance on difficult terrain: the engine output was gradually increased to 32 and then 34 hp. It remained the basic platform for the Unimog range until the 1970s, and above it the model range diversified very strongly during the 1960s.
